Purchasing a Loading Ramp (click to expand)If you want to transport your ATV, motorcycle, lawnmower, etc. on the back of your truck- a good loading ramp is a great investment. These products allow you to safely load and unload your toys from the bed of your truck with ease. Before making a purchase, consider the following:
What will you be using the loading ramp for? It is very important to determine your needs before buying a loading ramp. Loading ramps come in all shapes and sizes; and are designed to load basically anything you can think of. Make sure the loading ramp you buy will cover everything you need it to do. Failure to do this may result in a large investment of money into a loading ramp that does not work for you. What type of loading ramp should I buy? Buying the right loading ramp can be a daunting task. Loading ramps come in all shapes and sizes, and are designed to accommodate all sizes of loads. Bi-Fold ramps fold the width of the ramp in half, while tri-fold loading ramps fold the width into thirds. Tri-Fold loading ramps are often available with an open center track; keep this in mind when purchasing in case this would not fit your specific situation. Dual runner loading ramps, two separate loading ramps (runners) are available in folding or non-folding styles. Ra Ramps also have different weight capacities; make sure the loading ramp you choose has enough support to safely load your cargo. Be sure to factor your own weight in (if you are riding up), as well as any gasoline, cargo, or accessories that may be on your toy. Always use a loading ramp that exceeds the weight capacity of what you will be hauling. Finally, consider the length of loading ramp you will require. What is the load height from the ground to the bed of the truck/trailer when on level ground? Most ATVs have a wheelbase/ground clearance ratio that will climb almost anything. The length of the ramp needed for your load height, in most cases, will come down to personal opinion about what will give you the easiest incline. The typical way to do this is to drop the tailgate on your truck or trailer, place one end of a tape measure on the truck tailgate or trailer, and measure out on an angle till you find a length that looks optimal. As always, we are happy to help you find the loading ramp that is right for your needs. Feel free to give us a call at any time at 1-855-389-7426. Loading Ramp Safety (click to expand)Loading ramps come in all shapes and sizes. If used correctly, the chance of injury is slim. However, safety should be your first priority when loading and unloading materials and/or vehicles from the bed of your trailer or truck bed.
The first thing to consider is the weight capacity of your loading ramps. DO NOT EXCEED THIS WEIGHT! It is also important to note that you must make adjustments for any fuel, accessories, and yourself (if riding up) to the total weight being placed on the ramp. Many loading ramps are curved; this can add strength and also provides a flatter angle on top as the loading ramp levels off. The length and angle of your loading ramp is also an important factor to consider; the longer the loading ramp, the lower the loading angle. The lower the loading angle is, the safer the ramp will be, however, longer ramps are not only heavier, but are also more difficult to store. Many low clearance items, such as many lawn mowers, require a low loading angle to assure the unit will not bottom out on the top of the ramp when the machine rolls off the ramp and onto the truck bed or trailer. For every inch of height you are loading/unloading, your ramp(s) should be 2.2 inches long; For Example: to load equipment into a 30 inch truck bed height you should have a ramp at least 66 inches long. (30” x 2.2” = 66” Ramp Length Needed). It is extremely important to properly anchor your loading ramp to the surface you wish to load up to. The majority of loading ramps have a lip or flap that hooks over the bed of the truck or trailer; however, these do not always keep the ramp from moving backwards. This can cause the ramps to move backwards, falling off the vehicle and potentially causing serious injury. It is imperative to fasten the loading ramps to the truck or trailer in some way to prevent the ramp from coming off while in use. Anchor chains or a locking lug on the flaps can be used effectively. Also be sure to set the parking brake on the truck to guarantee it will stay in place while loading or unloading. Always observe the following rules: Lawn Mowers: Raise the mowing deck as high as possible. Even with it raised, the deck can “hang-up” on the ramp and cause an accident. Have your spotter watch for a potential “hang-up.” Double and triple check the spacing of the ramp(s) and alignment with the tires. Motorcycles: DO NOT ride your motorcycle up the ramp(s). You and your spotter should roll the motorcycle up with the engine turned OFF. Be on guard for “tip--overs.” ATV’s: ATV’s have enormous torque. If you over throttle the engine the ATV can bounce, change direction, or even flip over. DO NOT over throttle. Accelerate the vehicle slowly and evenly to slowly maneuver vehicle up the ramp. DO NOT stop the vehicle on the ramp. Loading and unloading onto the bed of a truck via loading ramps can be a very dangerous activity when not done correctly. NEVER OPERARATE ANY MACHINERY OR USE A LOADING RAMP AFTER CONSUMUING ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES AND/OR MEDICATION. Always make sure you are using the ramps correctly before use. If proper protocol is followed, you should have no problem moving your stuff around. Loading Ramps Brand Overview (click to expand)Oxlite
